Rest and relax in style
Are you the kind of person who skips into bed or do you dread it? Sleep is vital for optimal health and our bedrooms should be an oasis of calm away from the stress of every day life. How you feel in your bedroom can have an impact on the quality of your sleep, so if your bedroom isn’t a happy place you will want to read this post and try these 5 ways to turn your bedroom into a sanctuary!
Let’s start with the colour scheme. Yes, you may well like bold, very bright or dark and moody colours but personally, I don’t think they belong in the bedroom. In order to create an environment that is conducive to rest and relaxation choose soothing colour palettes in muted tones.
Grey is still one of my favourite shades to use throughout the home because it’s fresh, versatile and so easy to style. You can add colour and texture with soft furnishings and accessories.
My bedroom is currently painted in Lamp Room Grey from Farrow and Ball and I can’t imagine when I’ll tire of it. Other great options are Skimming Stone (an old favourite), Borrowed Light and Pink Ground is lovely.
I’m assuming that you have a good mattress already so next up is bed linen, I am a bed linen obsessive. I iron all my sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers because I take my bed very seriously, I want that luxury hotel feel every single day.
Go for natural fibres such as 100% cotton or linen and a high thread count. Natural fibres help regulate your body temperature and feel so soft against your skin. It’s really worth investing a bit more up front in exchange for a decent night’s sleep.
I’m currently using Elizabeth Scarlett’s Palmier duvet cover, inspired by the golden palms of the French Riviera and it makes me smile every time I walk into my bedroom. I adore the gold embroidery, machined to look exactly like Elizabeth’s drawings and the quality is excellent, really soft and lightweight which is ideal for summer nights.
I don’t mean to sound like your mother but keep your bedroom tidy and have a good clear out from time to time. Clutter can make you feel stressed and anxious which is the last thing you need when you are going to bed. If you struggle for storage space think about investing in some stylish baskets or clever storage to put under your bed. Out of sight, out of mind, isn’t that what they say?
Also I’m a big believer in keeping bedrooms well ventilated so throw those windows open and let that fresh air in!
Switch off, go screen free
I’m not going to tell you anything you don’t know already but if you want your bedroom to be your sanctuary then you really need banish emails, social media and TV from this room. I know it’s really hard but having tried the two and battled daily with the urge to look at my phone from the moment I open my eyes; I can tell you that starting and ending your day without a screen pressed to your nose does wonders for your wellbeing.
As is often the case the devil is in the detail and it’s the little touches here and there that pull the room together into a haven of rest and relaxation. The plant in the corner, the family photo, the candles and the carefully chosen mirror are key to creating a stylish and restful environment.
